You perfected the formula, your friends and family love it, you've seen the transformational results on your own skin and hair, and you want to share it with the world ASAP!
We don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but read below before you start selling to get your business off to a great start!

Preparation is key!
Admin is boring, sure! But without the correct paperwork, your business may fold before it has a chance to unfurl!
So, what should you do after perfecting your formula? Follow these steps to clear the path to business success in the cosmetic products world!
Find a good cosmetic product safety assessor early in the process. The right person will not only write a compliant cosmetic product safety report (CPSR), but they will also be able to advise on any other regulatory requirements! If you are lucky, they may be able to help make your formula safe if any issues are identified during the assessment process.
Ensure your cosmetic product is preserved and tested! Water-containing products must contain preservatives; they will not be safe to use without an appropriate preservative system! Don't forget to conduct the Preservative Efficacy Test (PET)! You will not be able to obtain a Cosmetic Product Safety Report for a water-based product without it!
Conduct stability studies! These are essential for all products, whether water-based or water-free. These studies not only ensure your product is stable for the intended time, but they can also help identify any potential interactions between ingredients and confirm the suitability of the chosen packaging.
Establish a good filing and tracking system. While inventory can normally be tracked via your e-commerce website, you must ensure you have a good grasp of all the other paperwork required. This includes, e.g. any formula changes and tests conducted, Safety Data Sheets for all ingredients, stability data test results, PET results, consumer complaints, any side effects reported...The list goes on!
Establish Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These are essential to make safe products of consistent quality. Make sure you write everything down, it's easy to forget little details!
Establish PIF - Product Information File - see our blog on this: https://www.moleculeregulatoryservices.co.uk/post/bite-size-guide-to-product-information-file
Check your labels are compliant and don't make any claims you cannot substantiate! Make sure your product doesn't claim to be a medicine! This could get you in real trouble! Contact your cosmetic product safety assessor to help you with labelling and cosmetic claims.
Get your product signed off by a qualified cosmetic product safety assessor. Once you have your final formula, stability test and PET test results, it's time to get back in touch with your safety assessor, who will write a Cosmetic Product Safety Report. The Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) is mandatory in the UK and EU if you want to sell your products in these markets. Don't risk being caught out without it. Not having a CPSR for your products may result in pulling your products from the market, not to mention loss of revenue, substantial fines and reputation damage. You really can't afford it!
Last but not least, notify your products via the appropriate portals. CPNP for EU: https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/cpnp/ and SCPN for UK: https://submit.cosmetic-product-notifications.service.gov.uk/.
